RECRUITMENT QUALIFICATIONS AND PROCESS FOR CAREER FIREFIGHTERS
Firefighting, medical and rescue work are physically demanding duties. Candidates must be in excellent health and have no conditions which would restrict their ability to safely perform these duties. These conditions must be met at the time of application and must be maintained throughout the application process.
Eligibility Requirements:
Minimum Age of 18 at date of application.
Must pass a rigid physical examination (far visual acuity shall be at least 20/30 binocular corrected with contact lenses or spectacles. Far visual acuity uncorrected shall be a least 20/100 binocular for wearers or hard contact lenses or spectacles. (Successful long term soft lens wearers shall not be subject to uncorrection criterion.)
Must have a valid drivers license from state of residence, with a reasonable driving record.
High school graduation or equivalent GED certificate. Preference may be given to those with college course work from accredited institution.
Must successfully complete physical agility and written exam.
Applicant’s record may not include: Conviction of a felony or other crime involving moral turpitude; one general court martial, more than one incidental court martial; or official military disciplinary action which some punishment was assessed; any discharge from the armed forces other than honorable discharge.
Must have the legal right to live and work in the United States.
Residency-no residency requirements presently exist.
Applicant furnishes copies of birth certificate, drivers license, high school transcript and diploma (or equivalent), college transcript (if applicable), and military discharge (form DD-214) if applicable. Applications not complete with supporting documentation may be automatically rejected. Also insert fire training.
A thorough background investigation will be conducted on tentatively selected candidates.
Minimum Training Requirements for Career Firefighter Candidate Include:

Physical Abilities Requirements:
To meet the minimum requirements of the Guil-Rand Fire Department, all career candidates need a combination of strength and endurance. Some candidates experience physical deficiencies in the areas of upper body strength, grip and forearm strength. The fire department has determined that an individual can successfully complete for the position of firefighter recruit if their preparation is focused on those physical abilities necessary to perform firefighting duties.
The abilities test is a result of a significant amount of research on the occupation of fire suppression. The task utilized, reasonably test the physical abilities of as individual as they apply to perform basic fire ground duties. The tasks consist of 9 events performed consecutively to include:

TASK 1 - SUPPLY LINE FROM HYDRANT TO PUMPER: The FF shall hook a short section of three inch hose up to the pumper and then to the hydrant. After each coupling is secure, turn the hydrant on until it is completely open. (Approximately 17 turns). |

TASK 2 - DON AIR-PAK: The FF shall, using an SCBA on the pumper, don yourself in complete turnout gear and SCBA making sure you have a proper seal. |

TASK 3 - HOSE ADVANCE: The FF shall after donning the SCBA, pick up a nozzle and move a 1 ¾ inch hose straight forward 200 feet, spray water for twenty seconds and close nozzle. Then walk to the next task. |

TASK 4 - AERIAL CLIMB: The FF shall after walking to the ladder truck, climb the ladder to the top on a sixty degree angle and back down. After descending, move on to the next task. |

TASK 5 - FORCIBLE ENTRY: The FF shall using a sledge hammer and a tire (11X20) or railroad tie, drive either/or five feet. This task is complete when either/or crosses the five feet line. |

TASK 6 - HOSE HOIST: The FF shall hoist a fifty foot section of three inch hose, using hand over hand motion, pulling a ½ inch rope to hoist the hose twenty feet to the top of the platform. This task is complete when the hose is secure. |

TASK 7 - HOSE ROLL: The FF shall using a fifty foot section of unrolled three inch hose, straighten the hose and roll up a doughnut roll. |

TASK 8 - VICTIM RESCUE: The FF shall drag or carry a 150 pound victim a distance of 75 feet. This task is complete when both the rescuer and the victim clear the entire distance. |

TASK 9 - GROUND LADDER CLIMB: The FF shall using a ½ inch rope secure the ladder to the building by tying a chimney hitch knot. Then proceed up the ladder with a section of three inch hose over your shoulder to the top of a twenty-four foot extension ladder and then back down. After touching the ground, the evaluation is over. |
